Oh No He Didn't: Just do it

I'm so happy my child has decided to go potty.  And I know that using public bathrooms is a fun things and a necessity for toddlers.  BUT, I swear it was a bit much yesterday.  Yesterday we went twice in Michaels, twice in Learning Express, twice at home during an hour long speech therapy, and not one...not two...NOT THREE...NOT FOUR...but FIVE TIMES!  Oh no he didn't!  Yes, he did and I'm sure the people at Applebees must think I can't control my kid.....  That was 5 times in 45 minutes because I asked them to pack us up.  He didn't poop until late last night.  I've even given him the ability to drop the duce in a diaper.  He tried in the potty all day until he was shaking with pain.  Poor baby!

Jumping through hoops

I had an interview today to have Chris qualified for SSDI and a Medical Card. We will be able to use the money to pay for his medical debt the medical card will help pay for the medical bills that he will have come January 1st.

I felt like I was jumping through hoops!
We had an appointment in June where we didn’t qualify because we had too much money in hidden assets; we fixed it by cashing out all of George’s bonds and using them to pay for bills and groceries. Now we have no backup if we can’t pay a bill. Thank you Uncle Sam for making us financially unstable so we can’t pay bills.

The person wanted to know multiple times why we were applying for Welfare. We aren’t applying for Welfare; we are applying for financial assistance for our disabled child. There is a difference!

Then, we had to prove that he wasn’t going to improve drastically. I can’t remove the extra 3 pieces of his 16th chromosome. I can’t! I can’t make him NOT be autistic. She kept asking over and over if he would have a chance of NOT being disabled.

Where the hell is my easy button?

This should come with an easy button.
Seriously, life with a child who has a disability isn’t hard enough? Between the SSDI thing, trying to get OT STILL for my child.  Aetna, I’m talking to you and your claim department!, I’m going to need my two buddies tonight Ben and Jerry and maybe my boyfriend Eric. Pam, you aren’t going to barge in this time with the vampire emergency, right?

Oh No He Didn't! Eric, I'm yours!

Eric the Viking Vampire....why do you tease me every week with your sexy body and those lucious lips?  Please forget that Sookie and pucker up with me.  I swear you'd enjoy these lips.  Pucker up baby!

Shame on you Jennifer Aniston/yesterday's Two Truths and a Lie

I thought  you had more class than to reference the "R" word!  As a parent of a child who will be forever associated with the "R" word I take offense to that word being used.  It is no different than using the "N" word or the "F" word.

My children know better than to call people words that could be hurtful in some way to someone.  As a adult you should know better as well.  I take offense to you comparing yourself to my child.  He's so much smarter than you.  He'll know not to say this word!
The "R" word clip

1. I am a history buff! I love to learn all things I can about historical events and would plan vacations around them if I could.

True:  On my honeymoon I was more excited to see the Mayan ruins than do things that honeymooners do :)

2. Jon and Matthew, my twins, are identical.
False:  Fraternal.  We saw we have matching his and hers.  Matthew is brown haired and brown eyed like George.  Jon is blonde hair and blue eyed like me (except I have green eyes on most days).

3. I have made it my life mission to educate people on Chris' genetic syndrome and will do all that I can to help others in the same boat.
True:  Enough said :P

PINT/ONHD: Talk to the hand

I had an Oh No He Didn't typed up last week all ready and forgot to ask The Drama Mama to post it for me.  My Bad, so I'll put it here still.....

My oldest, I love him something fierce! There was a time (4 years of time) when it was me and him against the world! But....he's in trouble with a capital T! He was on vacation with my parents for a week. He called me up on Saturday and said "Happy 40th birthday mom!" I was thrilled he remembered my birthday. The hitch? I'm 32 not 40! I told him I was 32 and not 40. His response? I knew one of my parents would be 40 on their next birthday and since you act older than Dad I though it was you! Oh No He Didn't!? I act older because someone has to be the mature one of the two of us! My child seriously thought I was 40! Grounded.....For Life, I tell you! No playstation, no I-Pod, nothing!

Two Truths and a Lie Thursday

Last weeks two truths and a lie.

1. I'm a lush. I love wine and am happiest while having a large drink after the boys go to bed.

Lie:  I don't drink often.  I don't like to drink and think there's much better things I can be doing with my time than drinking :)

2. Although I grew up in Renovo, PA, I was born in Germany. I had duel citizenship until I was 21.
Truth:  Yup, my dad was in the Air Force and I was born in Bitburg, Germany.  I did have to declare US citizenship when I was 21.  My birth certificate is in more than one part, one for a citizen born abroad and another from the pentagon showing I am a citizen.  It got a bit complicated on our honeymoon when the Mexican government thought I was lying.  That's a story for another day.

3. My birthday is Saturday!
My birthday was Saturday.  And I did have a drink, or two.  And I may have texted The Drama Mama a few times about it.  Can you say drunk dialing?

This weeks Two Truths and a Lie:
1.  I am a history buff!  I love to learn all things I can about historical events and would plan vacations around them if I could.

2.  Jon and Matthew, my twins, are identical.

3.  I have made it my life mission to educate people on Chris' genetic syndrome and will do all that I can to help others in the same boat.

Pictures from our Boston Trip

We went to the Boston Aquarium for 2 hours during our short stay up there.  The boys probably spent 1 and a half hours with the penguins :)
They got to touch starfish....

We went to Salem yesterday and walked around there.

Multiple posts-Home from genecist

Christopher has 16p11.2 duplication. He has an extra of a part of the p11.2 area on the 16th gene. The doctor said the duplication is better than the deletion and he will fare better. However, he will still have challenges throughout his entire life.

The doctor said that Chris condition isn't anyone's fault. My MIL insists that it's my fault because I couldn't get my prenatal vitamin in. I had hymeramisis! I lost 30 pounds thanks to throwing up. I got a vitamin through the iv's in the hospital. This doctor said that there was a fluke in either my egg or George's sperm that had this condition pre-wired already in it. So when either that particular egg or that particular sperm was used in concieving Chris, he was bound to have this. So, my MIL told me it was my bad eggs with all the things wrong with me. I guess she feels the need to blame someone and I'm the scapegoat.

He has some minor physical characteristics of the syndrome; the gap between his big toe and 2nd toe is bigger than it should and his eye has a slightly larger fold in it than it should. His head is smaller in proportion than his body as well. It is in the 25%.

The deletion has a heart condition associated with it as since Chris has the duplication, we shouldn't worry about it.

The abnormal MRI's he's had done prior to the diagnosis would have been a prime way to diagnosis him as the doctor said that almost ALL children with the duplication and deletion have abnormal MRIs. Chris has something called delayed mylenation. The easiest way to explain it is to think of a computer. Chris' brain is the computer, the neurons etc are the connections the computer needs to run. Chris' connections aren't all the way connected so his brain (computer) will be running slower than it should. Therefore, his capicity to gain new skills is slowed down and this will be a confirmation of intellectual disabilities.

Children with the deletion and duplication have a higher rate of seizure disorders so we need to be mindful of it. He's had 2 seizures when he was less than a year old and the doctor actually suggested what he has been doing that we thought were self stimming behaviors are actually seizure activity. He suggested we follow up with a neurologist for the possible seizure activity and to have periodic MRI's done.

He said that the rate of autism with this disorder is around 80%. Chris has already been diagnosed with PDD_NOS. My mom told me she feels that he was diagnosed as autistic only because WE told the doctors things that aren't true. The doctor who diagnosed him was working with us for a year and a half so he's seen him. The doctor used his observations, what the reports from early intervention say, and what we said to diagnos him. AND, it was confirmed by a doctor who is on the NJ board of directors for the govenor for autism research.

The literature said there's a higher rate of mental illness with this disorder. The doctor said it is only a 10% chance higer than the general population. I'll take my chance that he's on the 90% that don't have, KWIM?

As far as what to expect further down the line...there is not really a way to know what to expect. They said that the technology that was used to find genetic syndromes like this one is only 3 years old and so they haven't done a longitutal study just because the majority of those who have found out about this around around Chris' age. They are doing a study in Boston and NYC that we said we'd be interested in doing.

The doctor also said that Chris NEEDS the PT the school is denying. The syndrome itself has the low muscle tone associated with it and he will forever be clumsy looking, have week core, etc. He sits in a "W" sit and if he goes out of the "W" sitting position he will fall after 10 minutes or so. He also peeters out with eating after about 10-15 minutes. He feeds himself and will get tired from all the work and will get up and we will feed him.

He said there is a larger gap between expressive and receptive language skills. Chris has an almost year and a half delay in expressive skills vs. a smaller gap in receptive. His expressive skills are around 18 months and his receptive skills are around 27-30 months. He is also apraxic.

They want us to go back there once a year for followup care, see the neurologist for follow up MRIs, and continue with our other specialists, the ENT, Allergist, eye doctor, developmental ped, etc.

We're going on a trip

We're going today to Boston to the Children's Hospital there.  They have a genecist who specializes in Christopher's 16p11.2 duplication.  I'm excited and have high hopes that they can point us in the right direction.  I hope I don't come back disapointed!

riday we went to a function at Chris' center where they do his therapies out of.  They had a pony for pony rides, a petting zoo, and a few other stations set up for the kids to play at.  They loved it!  Chris was afraid of the pony but Jon and Matthew weren't.

I was nominated for this contest!  Please vote for me!  There are many other deserving moms as well.  Annie and Sarah are two friends of mine who were nominated for the same contest.
True:  I have 2 nieces on my husband's side and 2 nieces on my side.  AND....My sister is expecting number 2 in March.

This is Chris and my niece Ella.  She's my sister's daughter.

2. My favorite movie is The King and I.
True:  This is my all-time favorite movie!
There's just something about the movies of this time-period that I love.  I think it is a timeless story.

3. I am an avid runner and compete in marathons regularly.
False:  I think the last time I ran was when I was in high school.  I was our school's mascot and we weren't a good football team.  The other team was an Indian.  We were the Bucks.  Someone told him to start chasing me and pretending like he was going to "hunt" me.  They forgot to tell me he was a state champion runner.  I don't think I've ever run so hard in my life!

Next week!

We are 6 days away from Chris' genecist appoitment!  6 DAYS!  I'm so excited to go and have the ability to talk to someone who actually knows about his genetic syndrome.  I've been somewhat lucky to network with a bunch of amazing ladies who have children with 16p11.2 deletion (which the genecist said is similar in characteristics to the duplication).

Some good news with his development.  He's had increasing language skills that have blossomed within the past 3 weeks.  He's now asking "What that?" to everything.  He's telling me "You a filly girl" aka "You a silly girl."

We went to the GI with Matthew and are to "cleanse" him.  This is not my idea of a fun time!  I didn't envision I'd be cleaning up liquid shit from my almost 5 year old.  We're to do this and then give him Miralax once a day.  Next we need to call the neurologist; CHOP's neurology department books 2 weeks out so only on Mondays and Tuesdays so I have to call and get the appoitment but I was waiting until we came back from Boston to know if we need to make an appoitment for Chris too.  I don't feel like going to Philly twice in a row.

Jon has been playing amazingly with his playdough.  He's growing like a weed!  He and Matthew can somewhat share clothes now.  It will be easier in the buying and putting away of things!

Someone got ahold of the camera and took a picture of himself after he ate chocolate ice cream :)
