Sorry, no one ever said this blog would not have cuss words in it :) We got the official diagnosis today. Christopher has a duplication of the 16th chrosome. His specific area is 16p11.2, region 29,530,197-30,085,308. He is showing characteristics of autism, which we knew, but is an aspect that could happen with this genetic syndrome. He is also showing signs of being intellectually disabled. No matter what the diagnosis, he is still the same boy as he was yesterday. Now we just have the missing piece of the puzzle which will let us help him even more.
I can't write much more without crying right now so I'm off to have a date with my bed and pillow. I need a good cry!

- I'm a Special Education teacher and Reading Specialist. My husband and I have been married for 8 years and we have 4 boys, ages 14, 7 year old twins and a 5 year old. Our 14 year old is gifted. One of our twins has PDD_NOS, Apraxia, and Learning Disabilities, his brother has Aspergers, Learning Disabilities, and Anxiety. The Autism Pizza
It's a good explanation of how things line up on the spectrum.
1. The Crust: Lack of Social Interaction (poor eye contact, not sharing interests with you, no pointing/gesturing)
2. The Sauce: Impaired Communication (possibly no speech, poor conversation skills, repetitive language, echolalia, no make-believe play)
3. The Cheese: Stereotypical Activities & Interests (extreme routine, strong interest in certain things, stimming [flapping, atypical play, etc.] -- like spinning wheels, lining toys up, stacking, etc.)
If you have all of those things: crust, sauce, cheese, you made an Autism pizza. It might have different toppings, but you can look at it and know it's still a pizza. If your pizza doesn't have sauce, that's Aspergers's. If your pizza is missing more than that but still kind of looks like a pizza, that's PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified)

Remember, you were chosen, hand picked to be Christopher's parents by someone who knows much more than us. He knows you can handle it and will make the best decisions for Christopher. Hang in there, crying is allowed, just remember to balance it with laughter!
